Flathead National Forest Develops New Avalanche Website

By Beacon Staff

In response to public feedback the Flathead National Forest has taken steps to improve its winter avalanche program by developing a new website. The new website is scheduled to be unveiled in early December. The site will feature updated avalanche advisories and information about upcoming courses being offered in the Flathead Valley.

The Flathead Avalanche Center (FAC), formerly called the Glacier Country Avalanche Center, will be managed by the Flathead National Forest. The center will continue to work with Whitefish Mountain Resort to provide junior avalanche awareness classes at the Summit Education Center, and Big Mountain Patrol to provide a Level I and possibly a Level II Avalanche Course.

The FAC is eager to work with other partners, groups, individuals, and retail companies that want to become involved, according to a news release from the national forest.

Besides advisory postings, the new website will also provide information on the beacon park atop Big Mountain, observations and incidents posted by volunteers and avalanche specialists, educational opportunities and weather forecasts.
