Whitefish Bans Medical Marijuana Storefronts

By Beacon Staff

WHITEFISH – The Whitefish City Council has passed an ordinance banning medical marijuana dispensaries from operating storefront businesses in the city limits.

The ban approved Monday takes effect next month.

In 2009, the city put in place a temporary moratorium on storefront dispensaries after receiving many requests for medical marijuana businesses statewide. City officials twice extended the temporary moratorium while it waited to see what changes the legislature would make to the Montana Medical Marijuana Act.

The new ordinance does not restrict transactions between medical marijuana providers and their patients. Officials say it may be revised after the Montana Supreme Court resolves a case challenging the constitutionality of the 2011 Legislature’s changes to the Medical Marijuana Act.
