Heavy rain across Northwest Montana this week has resulted in flooding throughout the Libby and Troy area.

Lincoln County Sheriff Roby Bowe said six homes in the Troy area have been damaged by lowland flooding and at least three secondary roads were covered in water or washed away.

“We’re getting some high water and people should be aware of the weather and keep an eye on the forecast,” he said.

Late Wednesday, Libby Mayor Doug Roll and the Lincoln County Commission both declared a state of emergency in an effort to open up disaster funding to aid in the response.

According to the National Weather Service, heavy rainfall overnight resulted in rapidly rising streams.

The Fisher River near Libby has risen from roughly 100 cubic feet per second to over 1,000 cfs in a matter of days.

In a 48-hour span between Dec. 7-8, Libby had received nearly half an inch of rain. NWS data for the Big Creek Baldy area showed 0.83 inches of rain in a 48-hour span.

A flood advisory was in effect for central Lincoln County until 2:45 p.m. Wednesday.
