1984 Championship Team Behind MSU Turf Fundraiser

By Beacon Staff

BOZEMAN – Montana State’s 1984 national championship football team is the driving force behind raising the estimated $900,000 needed to install artificial turf at Bobcat Stadium.

Tom White, a member of the ’84 team and a member of the board of directors of the Bobcat Quarterback Club, said he and his former teammates started an endowment at their 10-year reunion.

“We never knew what we would put our money toward, but the idea was to do something tangible,” White said. “This is what has come up on the football wish list.”

White said when coach Rob Ash made the installation of artificial turf a priority, athletics director Peter Fields approached the ’84 team about helping to pay for it.

“It was an isolated project that maybe a group like ours could take on,” White said Friday. He said the group hadn’t raised enough money at the time, but said the former players are making additional contributions.

The university is asking the state Board of Regents on Friday to approve leasing the stadium to the MSU Foundation so work can begin on the turf project, in time to have it installed by early August. The lease agreement is required under state law.
