2012 Primary Results: Krueger Up 15 Votes in Commission Race

By Beacon Staff

The race for Flathead County Commission District 3 came down to the wire, as Gary Krueger and Gerald “Jay” Scott ran within 1 percent of each other throughout the night.

With all precincts reporting, Krueger led the Republican nomination by 15 votes over Scott, with a final tally of 3,636 to 3,621. It is undetermined whether Scott will request a recount.

Cal Scott is the GOP candidate for the District 1 seat, which opened unexpectedly after former Commissioner Jim Dupont’s death in March. Scott will face Democrat Gil Jordan in November’s general election.

In the District Judge Department 2 race, Robert Allison and Daniel Wilson will move on to the general election, with Allison taking 7,005 votes and Wilson with 5,380.

Senate District 3

In a contentious and closely watched race, incumbent Sen. Bruce Tutvedt of Kalispell narrowly edged out challenger Rollan Roberts II of Whitefish Tuesday night in the Senate District 3 Republican primary.

Tutvedt, who was one of the Senate’s highest-ranking leaders during the last Legislature, received 2,147 votes (45 percent) to Roberts’ 2,076 (43.5 percent), according to final unofficial figures from the Flathead County Election Department.

The wildcard in the race may have been Jayson Peters. Peters initially announced his candidacy as a Republican for the Senate District 3 primary and then withdrew from the race, but his name still appeared on the ballot. He received 543 votes (11.4 percent).

After moving from Florida to Whitefish two years ago, Roberts was making his first run at public office. He is the founder and CEO of a company that makes formulas to boost the immune system. Tutvedt is a farmer with deep family roots in the valley.

Roberts made his presence known this election season with supporters stationed at busy intersections holding signs for him. Those supporters were still active on election day, when they waved signs alongside Roberts at the entrance gates of the Flathead County Fairgrounds, where voting took place.

With the victory, Tutvedt moves on to face Democrat Shannon Hanson of Whitefish in the November general election. Tutvedt is seeking his second four-year term in the state Senate.
