Anaconda Schools Closed All Week Because of Flu

By Beacon Staff

ANACONDA – There will be no more school this week in the Anaconda School District because of high absenteeism from the flu.

Classes were also canceled last Friday.

Schools were open Monday, but district superintendent Tom Darnell said 315 students called in sick.

Darnell says a benchmark of 25 percent absenteeism was set last week to determine whether schools would close. Monday’s numbers of 28 percent exceeded that limit, prompting the decision to keep children home Tuesday and Wednesday.

Schools were already scheduled to close Thursday and Friday for state teachers’ meetings, meaning children will not return to school until Oct. 19.

Extracurricular activities will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis.

The Anaconda district does plan to make up the missed days.
