Avalanche Lake Trail Still Closed While Fire Crews Continue Battling Blaze
Officials say fire's growth is minimal due to rocky, steep terrain that is limiting growth
The Avalanche Lake Trail remains closed while firefighters continue battling a 45-acre blaze on Mount Brown in Glacier National Park.

Crews from the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service continue securing the perimeter of the Avalanche Wildland Fire, located near Avalanche Lake on the west side of Glacier National Park, the park announced Tuesday afternoon.

The latest suppression efforts include aerial water drops while fire crews worked to secure containment lines on the west and north sides of the fire. Officials said some of the fire is in rocky, steep terrain, limiting the probability of the fire to progress.

The estimated size of the Avalanche Wildland Fire is approximately 45 acres. The incident involves about 25 firefighters from Glacier National Park and Flathead and Kootenai national forests, in addition to eight smoke jumpers.

Smoke was reported on Sept. 1 at about 2:30 p.m. and the cause of the fire is believed to be lightning. Smoke is visible throughout various locations in the park, and in some locations in the Flathead Valley.

@NPDXReporter I think I'll start strategically calling it "pre-lunch" too, and then "forget" to eat my real lunch later. #dessertforlunch
