Bankruptcy Filing Details Diocese’s Assets, Debts
Diocese reported $28.9 million in unsecured debt and $4.7 million in secured claims
HELENA — The Roman Catholic Diocese of Helena's bankruptcy filing lists assets of just over $16 million and liabilities totaling $33.6 million.

The diocese filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization on Jan. 31 as part of a proposed $15 million settlement with hundreds of victims who said clergy members sexually abused them and the church covered it up.

Lee Newspapers of Montana reports court documents filed Friday indicated the diocese has $7.4 million in real estate and $8.7 million in personal property. The assets include Legendary Lodge on Salmon Lake valued at $3.5 million along with $6.1 million in deposits and loans owed by various churches or schools within the diocese. The filing said churches, cemeteries and other property worth $33 million is held by individual parishes.

The diocese reported $28.9 million in unsecured debt and $4.7 million in secured claims.
