Sculpture includes books, magazines and art that have been challenged across the U.S.
A 7-foot-tall metal sculpture featuring 29 banned books will be on display at the Flathead County Library beginning Friday, Aug. 2, with an opening reception at 5 p.m.

“Banned Challenged Censored” is the creative effort of Bozeman-based artists Collin Letts, George Cole and Sara Williams. The opening will feature a brief artist’s talk and an opportunity to discuss the piece with the creative team.

Funded by more than 60 individuals and Humanities Montana, the sculpture includes books, magazines and art that have been challenged across the U.S. Books featured in the sculpture include classics as well as newer titles, such as “The Grapes of Wrath,” “Daddy’s Roommate,” “The Color Purple” and “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.”

“Banned Challenged Censored” opened in October 2012 at the Bozeman Public Library. It has traveled to public libraries in Butte, Billings, Missoula and Helena. The sculpture will be on display in Kalispell through September 14, after which it will be at the Great Falls Public Library.
