BILLINGS – Bail has been set at $80,000 for a 28-year-old man accused of driving drunk and causing a fatal crash in Billings.
John Carey appeared in Justice Court on Monday on a charge of vehicular homicide while under the influence. He was arrested late Friday after being released from St. Vincent Healthcare.
According to court records, Carey was driving between 50 and 75 mph in a 25 mph zone on April 20 when he lost control of his car. Documents say the car struck a parked van and a concrete retaining wall before hitting a tree.
The crash killed 28-year-old Matthew Wilder.
Investigators are awaiting results of a blood test but say Carey admitted he'd been drinking.
On Monday, Carey resigned from his position as a junior member of Sen. Max Baucus' Bozeman campaign office.
