Bighorn Sheep From Wild Horse Island to be Moved to Libby Area

By Beacon Staff

KALISPELL (AP) – State wildlife officials plan to trap up to 30 bighorn sheep on Wild Horse Island in Flathead Lake and use them to augment a herd on the Kootenai Falls Wildlife Management area west of Libby.

The capture and relocation effort is planned for early in the week, depending on weather conditions and helicopter availability.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks surveys have indicated the number of bighorn sheep on the island has grown to between 130 and 150. Trapping and moving some of the sheep usually begins when the population reaches 100 animals.

FWP has used sheep from Wild Horse Island to start or augment many bighorn sheep herds around the state.
