Black Bear Shot Near Polson Elementary School

By Beacon Staff

POLSON — An adult black bear that resisted efforts to haze it out of Polson was shot and killed by game wardens with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes as it moved within three blocks of an elementary school.

CSKT Natural Resources Department spokeswoman Germaine White tells the Missoulian wardens tried to haze the bear on Tuesday, but it became agitated and officers decided to shoot the animal.

White says it was a very large bear in a residential area and the risk was too great.

She reminded rural residents to take steps to avoid attracting bears to their property, including keeping trash inside a garage or shed if possible and feeding pets inside or bringing pet food in at night.
