BNSF Freight Train Derails in Northeastern Montana
Freight traffic slows elsewhere in state, Amtrak's Empire Builder delayed
GLASGOW — BNSF Railway crews worked Wednesday to clean up a freight train derailment in northeastern Montana and repair the tracks.
Company spokesman Gus Melonas says about a dozen cars from a train headed from Chicago to Portland, Ore., derailed about 20 miles east of Glasgow on Tuesday afternoon.
The derailed cars, the equivalent of about two-dozen regular-sized cars, derailed in accordion fashion with some piling on top of others and some ending up on their sides. Some cars were ripped open and spilled freight, including designer handbags, shoes, batteries and canoes.
Melonas says BNSF hoped to have the main line cleared by midnight Wednesday. The rail line typically sees 30 trains per day.
Freight traffic was being moved to other Montana rail lines, while Amtrak officials say about 700 passengers were being bused between Wolf Point and Glendive.
