By Beacon Staff

The BNSF Railway Foundation awarded more than $35,000 worth of grants to six Flathead Valley charities on Feb. 1. A special ceremony, hosted by foundation president Zak Andersen, was held at the Hockaday Museum of Art in Kalispell on Saturday.

The Hockaday received $10,000 to support the restoration of 15 murals once displayed in the lodges of Glacier National Park. The murals were rediscovered a few years ago and donated to the museum in 2012. Two of the fully restored murals are now on display in the museum.

Other grants included $10,000 for the North Valley Food Bank in Whitefish; $2,500 for the Whitefish Theatre Company; $5,000 for the Flathead County Agency on Aging; $6,075 for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flathead County; and $2,000 for the Nurturing Center in Kalispell.

The BNSF Foundation was established in 1996 and supports organizations across 28 states and in the thousands of communities the railroad goes through. For more information visit www.bnsffoundation.org.
