By Beacon Staff

MISSOULA — A 56-year-old Condon woman is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals after Missoula police found a dozen decomposing cats in a residence she abandoned.

The Missoulian reports Rebecca Korn appeared in Justice Court Thursday. She was released without bond, but cannot own any pets.

Prosecutors say Korn’s sister told police that Korn had abandoned her residence several months ago, leaving a number of cats.

Sgt. Travis Welch says Korn gave police permission to enter the residence on Wednesday. Court records said she told investigators she was suffering from depression and abandoned her house because “she couldn’t take it anymore.”

Officers say they were met with an “unbearable” odor when the opened the house. They put on protective suits and masks and found the decaying skeletons of about 12 cats.
