Countdown to Fall Sports
Start-up dates for Flathead County high schools
Because of late spring rains and cool weather, it may seem like summer just began. But, in all reality, fall is right around the corner. And that means high school sports are about to get underway.

Here is your guide to start-up dates for fall sports at all five public high schools in Flathead County. Parents need to make sure their kids have all paperwork – physicals, consent forms and medical releases – completed and activity fees paid before practice starts.

Flathead:

-Football practice begins Friday Aug. 13 with a team meeting at 7 a.m. Equipment checkout for kids in grades 10-12 who still need gear is on Aug. 11 at 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The Black and Orange Scrimmage is held on Aug. 21 at 11 a.m.

-Cheerleading tryouts took place in May, but a second round of tryouts is on Aug. 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the school.

-Volleyball tryouts begin Aug. 16. The Black and Orange Scrimmage is at 3 p.m. on Aug. 21.

-Golf practice begins Aug. 12 at 8 a.m. at Buffalo Hill Golf Course.

-Soccer tryouts begin Aug. 16 at the Kidsport Complex. Scrimmages are held on Aug. 21 at the Kidsport Complex at 12:30 p.m. for girls and 1:45 p.m. for boys.

-Cross country participants must report to Woodland Park at 8 a.m. on Aug. 16 to hear practice times.

Glacier:

-Football practice begins Friday Aug. 13 at 7 a.m. Equipment checkout is Aug. 12 beginning at 9 a.m. The Navy and Green Scrimmage starts at 6 p.m. on Aug. 20.

-Students interested in trying out for cheerleading must report to the wrestling room at 9 a.m. on Aug. 13.

-Volleyball tryouts begin Aug. 16 at the school’s large gym beginning at 9 a.m. Scrimmages are held on Aug. 26.

-Golf practice begins Aug. 12. Students are to report to the school’s performance hall at 9 a.m.

-Soccer tryouts start Aug. 16. Students need to report to the school’s commons area at 9 a.m. Scrimmages are held on Aug. 26 at 4 p.m. for boys and 5 p.m. for girls.

-Cross country practice begins Aug. 16 at 9 a.m. Students are to report to the fitness room where practice times will be announced.

Whitefish:

-Football practice begins Friday Aug. 13 at 7:30 a.m. Equipment pick-up is Aug. 12 at 7:30 p.m.

-Cheerleading tryouts begin at 8 a.m. on Aug. 16.

-Volleyball equipment pick-up and locker assignments are at 6 p.m. on Aug. 13.

-Golf practice begins Aug. 12 at 9 a.m. at Whitefish Lake Golf Course.

-Soccer tryouts begin Aug. 16 at 8 a.m. at Smith Fields for both boys and girls.

-Cross country practice begins Aug. 16 at 8 a.m. by the track.

Columbia Falls:

-Football practice begins Friday Aug. 13 at 8 a.m.

-Cheerleading begins at 6 a.m. on Aug. 16.

-Volleyball practice is on Aug. 16 at 8-10 a.m. for grades 10-12 and at 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for freshmen.

-Golf practice begins Aug. 12 at 3:30 p.m. at Meadow Lake Resort.

-Soccer practice is held Aug. 16 at 7:30-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. for girls, and 9-11 a.m. and 2-4 p.m. for boys.

-Cross country begins at 7 a.m. on Aug. 16 at the high school.

Bigfork:

-Football practice begins Monday Aug. 16 at 7 a.m. at the high school gym.

-Cheerleading is held Aug. 16 at 9 a.m., with students reporting to the school foyer.

-Volleyball practice begins Aug. 16 at 8 a.m. at the gym.

-Soccer practice begins Aug. 16 at 8 a.m. at Carlyle Johnson Park for boys and girls.

-Cross country participants meet Aug. 16 at 9 a.m. at the school foyer.
