Flathead County sheriff’s deputies were negotiating with a 46-year-old Creston man Monday morning, trying to end a standoff that began Sunday.

Robert Kowalski’s roommate called 911 at about 11 a.m. Sunday to report that Kowalski told him he shot his girlfriend and was feeling suicidal.

Sheriff Mike Meehan says Kowalski’s girlfriend was found shot to death at her house. She has not been identified. An autopsy was scheduled Monday at the state crime lab in Missoula.

Officers surrounded Kowalski’s house at about 2 p.m. Sunday, but didn’t confirm he was home until about 7 p.m., when a SWAT team broke some windows and Kowalski began swearing at them.
