Crews Begin Spring Plowing at Glacier National Park

By Beacon Staff

Crews have begun plowing Chief Mountain Road in the northeast corner of Glacier National Park and on Tuesday will begin plowing parts of the Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Stephanie Dubois, the park’s acting superintendent, said the spring plowing is “a good opportunity to remind the public that the Sun Road is under rehabilitation” and that visitors should expect to drive only as far as Avalanche and Jackson Glacier Overlook this spring.

Construction work requiring both lanes of the road to be closed just above the West Tunnel will continue through early June. Depending on weather conditions, park officials plan to open the entire length of the 50-mile historic highway over Logan Pass on June 13.

Several park roads — including the Camas Road, the Inside North Fork Road and the Cut Bank Road — will not be plowed. Snow on those roads is allowed to melt, and vehicles will only be allowed when the roads are dry.

Dubois said that because of construction on the Sun Road, the park will not host the annual “Show Me Day,” an opportunity for the public to watch plows at work on the road’s alpine section.
