LIBBY – A Eureka man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a shootout with Lincoln County deputies in May.
District Judge Michael Prezeau sentenced Harry Sultzer Monday to 10 years in prison with five suspended on each of two counts of assault on a peace officer. Sultzer pleaded guilty in November.
Prosecutors say Sultzer was under the influence of drugs on May 20 when he pointed a rifle at a friend and shot through the roof of a trailer house.
Later, officers tried to pull Sultzer over for driving erratically. Prosecutors say Sultzer sped back to his trailer, got out of the truck and pointed a rifle at two deputies.
Deputy Steve Short fired three rounds at Sultzer, hitting him twice in the chest. Court records say Sultzer fired eight to 10 rounds at Short before his gun jammed. Sultzer’s shots hit a patrol car and a nearby van.
