North of Libby, along Montana Highway 37, is an area full of outdoor recreational possibilities, all anchored by the massive Libby Dam. Between Libby and Eureka, the dam forms Lake Koocanusa, which provides spots for camping, hiking, fishing and boating.

A visitor center with a small gift shop is located on the west side of the dam. Dam tours begin at the visitor center and are offered four times a day during the summer, beginning at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. People are asked to arrive 10 minutes before the tour.

Also, due to security concerns, a valid identification card is required for all adults. Cameras and bags are not allowed on the tour.

How to Get There

To get to the visitor center, drive north on Montana Highway 37 for 13 miles from Libby.

There, take a left on Forest Service 228.

The dam visitor center is four miles ahead on the right, off Souse Gulch Road.

Forest Service roads on the west side of the lake and Highway 37 on the east side all provide access to the lake as well.
