EXPLORE: Logan State Park and Middle Thompson Lake

By Beacon Staff

The cold weather has resulted in some clear days recently and there’s no better way to take in Montana’s epic scenery than a trip out to Logan State Park between Kalispell and Libby.

This oft-forgotten stretch of U.S. Highway 2 offers great access to many of the Northwest Montana’s scenic and recreational wonders and Logan State Park is among them. The 17-acre park is heavily forested along the shore of Middle Thompson Lake.

The state park is located within the 3,000-acre Thompson Chain of Lakes Recreation Area.

The state park has 37 campsites and is great for bird watching or hiking. But this time of year the outdoor activity that rules them all is ice fishing. On a recent afternoon, ice fishermen were out on the ice cutting a hole and dropping a line.

How to get there:

From Kalispell, drive west on U.S. Highway 2 for 44 miles.
