Sparks will fly on New Year’s Eve on Big Mountain in Whitefish. And it won’t just be from the fireworks above. Whitefish Mountain Resort hosts the annual New Year’s Eve Rail Jam, which includes a $750 cash purse for skiers and snowboarders who compete.

The Rail Jam features competitors maneuvering a series of terrain park features one after another. The constant action makes it a great event for spectators.

Check-in and registration starts at 3 p.m. and is limited to just 60 people – because of that, the resort recommends people sign up in advance. From 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., the skiers take to the hill. At 5:45 p.m., the snowboarders take their turn.

After that, there are fireworks and awards. At 7 p.m. there is music at Ed and Mully’s and at 10 p.m. music starts at the Bierstube.

For more information, visit www.skiwhitefish.com.

How to Get There

From downtown Whitefish, drive north on Baker Ave over the railroad overpass.

There, Baker turns into Wisconsin Ave.

Drive north for about two miles and take a right on the Big Mountain Road.

@djtabish You may have $10, but I have the fleeting hope that I'll be a millionaire without having to do any work for it. #lazy
