In winter, the swarms of tourists are long gone from the trails and paths of Glacier National Park, making it the least crowded time of year to enjoy all the park has to offer. On the west side of the park, there are numerous trails to go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.

And this winter, the National Park Service is offering guided snowshoe tours from the Apgar Visitor Center every weekend.

Every Saturday and Sunday, the public is invited to join a two-hour, ranger-led snowshoe excursion in the area surrounding Apgar and the southern end of Lake McDonald. The tours are free and start and end at the Apgar Visitor Center.

Participants can bring their own snowshoes or rent some from the park for a small fee. People are asked to wear sturdy winter boots and dress warmly.

There is no group size limit and no reservations are taken. In the event of severe weather or insufficient snow, individuals should contact the visitor center at (406) 888-7939. Tours leave at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. and go until March 17.

There are plenty of other places to go snowshoeing or skiing in the park. The park also encourages people to be safe when venturing into the park in winter.
