Time is running out to drive the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park.

The final day visitors will be able to drive the entire length of the road from West Glacier to St. Mary is Sept. 16. After that it will be closed for road construction on the west side.

Access to Logan Pass from the east side will remain until Oct. 14, weather permitting.

The 50-mile road through the park provides access to stunning vistas that make Glacier famous.

On some occasions, wildlife can be seen from your vehicle. Opened in 1932, the road has been designated a National Historic Landmark and Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

If you don’t want to drive the road, taking a historic “Red Bus” tour from Glacier Park Inc. is a great alternative.

The company maintains a fleet of historic buses that have served the park since the 1930s. For more information, check out www.glacierparkinc.com or www.nps.gov/glac.

How to Get There

From Kalispell, drive 33 miles east on U.S. Highway 2.

At West Glacier, take a left under the railroad bridge and enter the park.

@NPDXReporter I think I'll start strategically calling it "pre-lunch" too, and then "forget" to eat my real lunch later. #dessertforlunch
