EXPLORE: Whitefish Trail in Winter

By Beacon Staff

With the Flathead Valley firmly within winter’s grip, it can be more difficult to get out and enjoy the outdoors.

But for those on the north end of the Flathead Valley, the Whitefish Trail provides an easy way to get outside this time of year. Nearly 20 miles of trail slice through a large swath of public and private land just west of Whitefish.

In winter, the Whitefish Trail, specifically Lion Mountain, offers folks the chance to go hiking, snow biking or snowshoeing. The trails provide access to some awesome scenic vistas.

The Whitefish Trail was established by the Whitefish Legacy Partners and has continued to grow in recent years. Plans call for an extensive trail system to be built in the coming years.

How To Get There

From downtown Whitefish, continue north on U.S. Highway 93.

Just past the golf course, veer right on Lion Mountain Road.

A sign for the Lion Mountain Trailhead will come up on the right.
