EXPLORE: Whitefish Whiteout

By Beacon Staff

Heart rates and skiers will be racing on the slopes of Big Mountain on Saturday, Jan. 19, during the sixth annual Whitefish Whiteout.

The race is based off the European Randonee tradition, where competitors skin up the slopes to the summit and then remove the skins and ski down.

According to Whitefish Mountain Resort, the course takes skiers up and down the mountain through a variety of terrain and can take up to three hours.

The race is by no means easy, but is perfect for competitors who want to earn their turns. There are various categories to enter and plenty of prizes.

There is a $40 registration fee (or $45 if you register the day of). There is also an ascent only division which costs $10.

It is highly recommended that competitors wear a helmet and carry a beacon, shovel and probe.

Not only does it make the event safe for all competitors, it means everyone is carrying the same amount of weight going up the hill.

The event starts at 10 a.m. on Jan. 19 at the bottom of chair one. For more information, visit www.skiwhitefish.com.
