Farmers Say Wet Weather Means Bumper Grain Crops

By Beacon Staff

BOZEMAN – Some Bozeman area farmers say they’re expecting a bumper wheat crop this year.

Wheat Montana owner Dean Folkvord farms near Three Forks. He says that the weather this season — with plenty of rain and moderate temperatures — has been perfect for growing wheat and he’s expecting a hefty haul at harvest.

But the outlook isn’t so good across the state. The USDA estimates that Montana wheat production this year will be down 7 percent compared to 2008.

The state ranks third nationally in wheat exports, generating more than $1 billion worth in 2008.
