Feature Photo: Samaritan House Portrait Exhibit

By Beacon Staff

Seventh-grader Cylus Stremel, left, answers questions from Heidi Escalante near the large, framed photograph of Samaritan House resident Billy on display in the Museum at Central School in Kalispell. The “Who Cares?” photography project seeks to dispel the stereotypes of who the homeless are in our community through black-and-white environmental portraits of Samaritan House residents taken by professional photographer Heidi Long.

Descriptive articles, interpretive essays and posters written by Kalispell Middle School seventh graders accompany the images, sharing the students’ views on homelessness in the Flathead Valley.

“I wanted to present something as far away from stereotypical photographs of homeless people as possible,” said Long.

The photographs will be on display at the museum until August.
