Female Grizzly Relocated in Northwest Montana

By Beacon Staff

Wildlife managers relocated an 8- to 10-year-old female grizzly bear in hopes of bolstering the grizzly population in the Cabinet-Yaak ecosystem of northwest Montana.

The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department says the 400-pound grizzly was captured in the Whitefish Range on Thursday and released Friday in the Cabinet Mountains south of Troy.

The state agency worked with the Kootenai National Forest and the Cabinet-Yaak subcommittee of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee on the release.

The bear was fitted with a special radio-collar to it could be closely followed.

FWP Wildlife Manager Jim Williams says a female grizzly with good health and no previous conflict with humans was chosen for the relocation.
