Flathead Judges Recuse Themselves in Barkus Boat Crash

By Beacon Staff

District judges in Flathead County have removed themselves from presiding over any possible court dealings involving state Sen. Greg Barkus and his boating accident.

Five people, including Congressman Denny Rehberg, were injured when Barkus’ boat ran aground on Flathead Lake in the dark in late August.

No charges have been filed in connection with the accident. But, Court Administrator Bonnie Olson says all three judges felt it wouldn’t be appropriate to preside over any court proceedings regarding the senator because they know him.

Any court proceedings in the case will be presided over by District Judge William Nels Swandal of Livingston.
