Former Legislative Candidate Charged With Assault

By Beacon Staff

Will Hammerquist, former Democratic legislative candidate for Whitefish’s House District 4, was arrested Thursday and charged with partner family member assault, a misdemeanor. Whitefish police responded to a 911 call at Hammerquist’s home on the evening of Jan. 6 and took him into custody. He has since been released. The case will be heard in Whitefish City Court.

“The facts will all come out in due course,” Sean Hinchey, Hammerquist’s attorney, said. “At this point, he steadfastly maintains his innocence.”

Hammerquist’s partner, alleged victim Rebecca Edwards, called the incident, “a drastic miscommunication and misunderstanding with the police department, which we are working on resolving right now.”

Hammerquist is the Glacier program manager for the National Parks Conservation Association.
