Whitefish skier Maggie Voisin and University of Montana soccer player Maddey Frey are nominees for the 2014 Montana AAU Little Sullivan Award, the organization announced.
Voisin and Frey are among four females up for the award, which is considered the highest amateur athletic honor in the state. University of Montana basketball player Jordan Sullivan and Montana State player Jackie Elliott are the other two female nominees.
The male nominees are Olympic skier Brad Wilson, MSU football player Tanner Bleskin, UM football player Jordan Tripp and Stanford basketball player Josh Huestis.
The Montana AAU Little Sullivan Award banquet is May 3 in Butte.
The organization looks for nominees who exemplify leadership, character and sportsmanship, as well as athletic achievement.
Voisin, 15, qualified for the U.S. Winter Olympics Team in the slopestyle event after earning silver at the Winter X Games. She became the youngest member of Team USA since 1972.
Frey, a Kalispell native and former standout at Glacier High School, capped her successful career playing soccer at the University of Montana last fall. She was named to the 2013 National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s University Division Women’s Scholar All-West Region team, a collection of players who have found success in both their athletic and academic pursuits. Majoring in mathematics, she has maintained a 3.86 GPA. Frey started 75 of Montana’s 80 matches during her four-year career and collected four postseason awards: two performance-based, two academic-based. She was named second-team All-Big Sky Conference and third-team NSCAA All-Pacific Region after finishing her senior season third on the team in scoring with four goals and two assists. And her academic excellence earlier resulted in second-team Capital One Academic All-District 7 honors.
Huestis is a former standout at Great Falls CMR and currently a senior at the University of Stanford, where he is the career blocks leader. Wilson, a Butte native, was a member of Team USA in men’s moguls at the recent Sochi Games. Bleskin, a former CMR football player, was a senior wide receiver for the Bobcats last fall. Tripp was a former standout from Missoula Big Sky who finished his senior season at outside linebacker for the Grizzlies last fall.
There were co-recipients for the male award last year, Trent Sprenkle (wrestling) and Caleb Schreibeis (football). Rachel Semansky (basketball) earned the female award.
