FVCC Hosts Community Conversation ‘100 Days Past Sandy Hook’
The event is free and open to the public and will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on March 26
The Scholars Program at Flathead Valley Community College will host a community conversation on violence titled “100 Days Past Sandy Hook” on March 26 in partnership with the Abbie Shelter and an affiliate of the Montana Human Rights Network.
Event presenters will reflect on violence in today's culture as highlighted by the tragic shooting that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December.
“Communities that know how to listen to each other are likely to embrace responsibility for each other’s safety and well-being,” Event coordinator Hilary Shaw said in a statement.
Roundtable discussions will take place at the beginning of the evening followed by expert speakers from the community, including representatives from Western Montana Mental Health, the Kalispell Police Department and the Flathead High School Guidance Department.
“Many of us were deeply shaken by the tragedy at Sandy Hook and there was no place to really discuss its impact,” said event organizer Julia McKay.
“We hope to inspire courageous and respectful conversation with our neighbors as well as explore the values and practices that lead to renewal and non-violence.”
Conversations will focus on understanding some of the factors that fuel violence and what can be done to make the community a safer place now and in the future.
The event is free and open to the public and will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. in the large community meeting room inside the Arts and Technology Building on the college’s campus.
