FVCC President to Attend State of the Union Address

By Beacon Staff

Sen. Max Baucus has arranged for two Montanans to attend the State of the Union address in Washington D.C. One of them is Jane Karas, the president of Flathead Valley Community College. The other is Natasha Sullivan, a Bozeman High School student participating in the Senate Page Program.

In a press release from Baucus’ office, Karas called it a “great honor” to see the address in person.

Here’s Karas’ full statement:

“I am excited about the opportunity to hear the State of the Union address in person, to observe what’s happening and represent the state of Montana. It’s a great honor to be able to do so. I hope to hear about economic development and how we can help the economy recover. Education is certainly critical to our nation, and as an educator that’s one of my key concerns. Like Senator Baucus, the President has been a great supporter of community colleges and I hope that continues. I look forward to hearing how we as a community college can continue to help not just our local community but our region and our nation.”

And Baucus’ statement:

“Creating jobs for Montana has to be our number one priority right now, and we know that education is a key to making that happen. Montana community colleges do incredible work to make sure our workers have the skills they need to land jobs in today’s economy. When I heard Jane was going to be in D.C. this week, I was thrilled to invite her to represent Montana at the State of the Union.”
