Glacier Girls, Bigfork Boys Claim State Tennis Titles

By Beacon Staff

Led by strong performances in both singles and doubles, the Glacier High School girls tennis team won its first-ever Class AA state tennis title over the weekend after finishing in the third place each of the past two seasons. The Glacier boys finished in a tie with Billings Senior for second behind Missoula Hellgate.

Junior Liana Bates was the Class AA runner-up for the third straight year, again losing to two-time state champion Ellie Crum of Great Falls High. Bates’ younger brother, Kellen, capped off an undefeated freshman year by winning the Class AA boys single title. He never even lost a set this season.

The doubles team of junior Cami Mathison and freshman Veronica Walton won the girls doubles title for Glacier.

In Class B/C, Bigfork won the boys state championship, while the girls finished in a tie for third with Baker behind champion Chinook and runner-up Cut Bank. Bridger Mahlum finished second in singles for boys, while Jade Bosic also finished second for girls. Bigfork’s best doubles performance was the second-place finish of Evan Jordt and Ryan Gembala in boys.
