Glacier Girls Finish Fifth at State Soccer Tournament

By Beacon Staff

The Glacier girls beat Billings Skyview 1-0 to earn fifth place at the Class AA girls state soccer tournament at Kidsports Complex last weekend.

Glacier achieved an impressive turnaround this season, finishing 7-8-1 a year after going 0-12-1. Under new head coach Brendan Byrd this season, the Wolfpack won their first game in nearly two years, beating Missoula Hellgate, and advanced to the playoffs for the first time since 2009. The girls also tied unbeaten Helena, the top team in Western AA.

Bozeman swept the state titles. The girls beat defending champ Billings Senior 1-0 and the boys edged Helena 1-0.

Postseason honors were announced this week and a few local players made the prominent lists. For girls, Glacier’s Anna Deleray and Kendall Halliburton were named all-state along with Flathead’s Malia Ozegovich. Flathead’s Jaclyn Rauthe, Paige Birky and Payton Pietron were named Western AA all-conference as well as Glacier’s Sara Burch.

For boys, Matt Peters from Glacier was named all-state and teammates Connor Brandon and Jake Lockwood were named all-conference. Flathead’s Monte White and Andrew Wilson made all-conference, too.
