WEST GLACIER – Glacier National Park officials say a grizzly bear yearling that died after being hit by a tranquilizer dart suffered from internal bleeding not related to the dart.
The results show the bear died from a laceration of the jugular vein. The necropsy was unable to determine how the vein was ruptured.
The necropsy was performed by Jennifer Ramsey, wildlife veterinarian with the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks.
The yearling was darted on Aug. 17 as part of a bear management action to remove from the park a 17-year-old female grizzly that had become conditioned to people. After the female grizzly was killed, two yearling cubs were hit with tranquilizer darts. Final details are being worked out to transport the other bear to the Bronx Zoo in New York.
