The National Park Service plans to hire a new superintendent for Glacier by next month, according to a park official.
The search for Chas Cartwright’s permanent replacement remains ongoing despite a hiring freeze in the NPS. The Park Service is undergoing a series of final interviews with the top candidates.
“We’re hoping to have a new superintendent selected by the end of April,” James Doyle, the NPS director of communications, said last week.
NPS Intermountain Regional Director John Wessels will make the selection after a board reviewed the applicants and narrowed the list. Doyle would not specify on the number of finalists or applicants.
“It certainly did attract a lot of attention. It’s a very sought-out position. We have had numerous highly qualified individuals apply,” Doyle said, adding, “Glacier is one of our iconic parks and we absolutely want to get a new permanent superintendent before summer.”
Kym Hall, a 26-year veteran of the Park Service, has served as Glacier’s interim chief since January after Cartwright’s retirement. Hall previously served as deputy superintendent since July 2011. She said she applied for the permanent position.
