“Work hard, learn a lot, and have fun!” said Jordan Fiorillo. That’s how Fiorillo describes a trip she has organized for Flathead Valley residents. But it’s not a typical vacation; it’s a working trip. Youth and adult participants get to see sights, but they also dig in to hands-on work for a local community located thousands of miles away Whitefish.
With scars from Katrina still not healed, Fiorillo and Flathead Travel Service, Inc. is organizing groups to travel to New Orleans to help repair communities and homes June 14-21. An organization called Global Green will be working exclusively with a group from the Flathead Valley there.
“This is a chance to make a difference down in New Orleans, to try and heal the wounds,” she said. For three days volunteers will be rebuilding on site. They will also be able to see the city and many of the landmark’s that still remain.
With Global Green, volunteers will help build the homes with sustainable materials with the “green” idea in mind. Throughout the week Global Green’s staff will work with groups and talk to them about what they are doing and the overall goal.
This trip is open to all youth and adults who want to see New Orleans and want to help. Area attractions that will be visited while there are Crawfish Bowl, Tulane University, Audubon Zoo, and Aquarium. They will be staying in the French Quarters, the heart of New Orleans jazz music. Fiorillo said, “This is truly one of a kind trip.”
