HIGHS & LOWS

By Beacon Staff

Chuck Curry wins the Flathead County sheriff’s race. Meanwhile, Sen. Jon Tester is facing transparency questions.

HIGH
CHUCK CURRY – Winning the Flathead County sheriff’s race handily, he’s got a mandate for change and ample time to prepare for the office.
McDONALD & REHBERG – Both Democrat Dennis McDonald and Republican Denny Rehberg won contested primaries to face off in November for the U.S. House, Montana’s biggest election this year.
CABLEVISION – This New York cable company is acquiring Bresnan Communications for $1.37 billion, giving it a presence across the West.
PUBLIC EMPLOYEES – At a union convention, Gov. Brian Schweitzer told state employees they would not be laid off or furloughed, despite falling state revenues.

BETWEEN
AFGHANISTAN – The discovery of rich mineral resources in this impoverished country portends a potentially lucrative industry that could raise the standard of living. But with developed nations clamoring to exploit those resources, the nature of U.S. involvement there is likely to fundamentally alter – and continue.

LOW
RECYCLING – With commodity prices poor, recycling companies and programs like Flathead County’s WasteNot, are seeing steep decreases in revenue.
JON TESTER – Displeased with proposed changes to his Forest Jobs bill, this Democratic senator is also under fire for transparency questions regarding a draft of the legislation.
“NARRATIVES” – Year of the Tea Party? Anti-incumbent rage? Political polarization? It’s hard to draw any conclusions from last week’s primary results, save that women candidates look to be coming out on top. Anything could happen this year.
ROBERT GREEN – This English goalkeeper is getting blasted in the media after his blunder in World Cup play allowed the U.S. to tie.
