Hooked on Fishing Program Underway in Northwest Montana

By Beacon Staff

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ Hooked on Fishing program is underway in schools across northwest Montana for the 2010-2011 school year. In the program, students in middle elementary grades (mostly 4th graders) take part in the program, which includes fall fishing, ice fishing, spring fishing, fish dissection, fishing regulations, study of fish biology, and other activities. Teachers in about 65 classrooms in northwest Montana host the program for their students, aided by FWP instructors and parent volunteers.
The program aims to teach students about science using local examples, and provide a positive outdoor activity than students can participate in with their families. Students visit local fishing ponds such as Snappy’s Pond, Dry Bridge Slough, Shady Lane Pond, Buffalo Head Pond, and other local waters in the 4-county area.
About 1,500 students are involved in northwest Montana’s Hooked on Fishing program. State- wide, about 2,500 students participate. For more information on the program, call FWP at 752-5501.
