Hundreds of Acres Burn Near Anaconda

By Beacon Staff

BUTTE – A wildfire 10 miles north of Anaconda was holding steady at 300 acres, but fire officials were closely watching for flare-ups on the 300-acre Beilenburg fire.

The fire is burning in beetle-killed timber in the Pintler Ranger District of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest.

Incident commander Joe Sampson said Monday the flames have destroyed two abandoned sheds on old mining claims in the area. The fire has also prompted the closure of Racetrack Canyon Road and Beilenburg Road as well as the Racetrack and Beilenburg campgrounds.

A lightning strike is being blamed for the fire.

Elsewhere, fire crews Monday afternoon fully contained the 300-acre Sweet Clover fire near Park City. The state Department of Natural Resources said crews will continue to monitor the fire through the next several weeks.
