Investigation Finds No Wrongdoing by Governor’s Brother

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – An investigator says that she found no wrongdoing by Deputy State Auditor Walt Schweitzer, the governor’s brother, amid allegations he used the office to raise political money.

The investigator, Missoula attorney Elizabeth Kaleva, says that the former employee making the allegations refused to be interviewed. Kaleva says that made it difficult to resolve inconsistencies between the former employee’s accusations and the denials from Schweitzer and other current employees.

Former agency administrator Laura McGee has said publicly that she was fired after complaining that Walt Schweitzer solicited campaign funds in the office.

Kaleva says Schweitzer denied the charge and she found no proof it was true.

The state commissioner of political practices has previously said there were no grounds for him to investigate a complaint filed by the Montana Republican Party on the issue.
