Investigators: Sister May Have Shot 1-Year-Old

By Beacon Staff

Flathead County investigators believe a gunshot that injured a 1-year-old girl last month was fired by her 2-year-old sister while the girls were sitting in their parents’ pickup truck near Somers.

The 1-year-old girl was struck in the chin by a bullet from a .22-caliber pistol. The girls were in the truck on Nov. 25 while their parents worked on a home they are building.

Detective Kipp Tkachyk says it doesn’t appear the 1-year-old shot herself. She was treated at hospitals in Kalispell and Spokane, Wash., and has since been released.

The girls’ mother told investigators the semi-automatic pistol was kept, unloaded, in the vehnicle. Tkachyk says that may mean there were bullets in the magazine, but not one in the chamber.

Prosecutors have not decided if any charges are warranted.
