Judge Rejects New School Funding Argument

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – A Helena judge is rejecting arguments from school groups that claim the state isn’t funding schools adequately.

District Judge Jeffrey Sherlock released a preliminary order Tuesday, saying he is still working on the final decision. Sherlock is rejecting a request by school groups wanting the court to demand the state do more on the school funding issue.

The Montana Quality Education Coalition argued in court, this fall, that the state failed to respond appropriately to a previous court decision that declared Montana’s school funding system unconstitutional.

The attorney general and the governor say the state has increased school funding sufficiently.
