Juice & Mopeds: A Summer Combo

WHITEFISH – When Micheal Medlin looked at the A-frame building on Spokane Avenue leading into downtown, he knew he’d found a place to rent mopeds. He also knew that would probably mean he’d be sitting around waiting for people to rent the motorized bikes, and sitting around isn’t something he does well.

So he added a juice bar, and then decided to serve Greek food as well. The result is GoGo Mopeds and Juice Bar, which opened just under six weeks ago and is bustling with summer business.

“It’s been really awesome,” Medlin said, while making up a gyro order on the outside patio grill.

Medlin is a familiar character in the Flathead, having been part of the band HumanLab and starting up the Midway Swap Meet in 2011. Late night revelers might also know him from his hot dog stand, Zombie Dogs, which has also become a staple of downtown Whitefish nightlife.
This newest venture combines Medlin’s love for food and his desire to fill a need he sees lacking in the Flathead.

There were no other places to rent mopeds in town, he said, and while selling late-night hot dogs, he spoke with plenty of tourists who were either confined to a large recreational vehicle or on foot while at their hotels.

With these mopeds, tourists can rent transportation for $15 an hour or $65 per day and get around to all the Whitefish hot spots.

“It’s an inexpensive way for people to see the city,” Medlin said.

The fleet consists of 21 2013 Tomos 50 CC mopeds, all of which have pedals, helping them conform to state law that says such machines do not require a motorcycle license. The bikes get up to about 35 mph, Medlin said, and each rental comes with a helmet.

There’s also a specially made rickshaw moped that Medlin intends to deploy in downtown Whitefish very soon. It will operate on the “trips for tips” plan, he said.

The purple A-frame building where people rent the mopeds also houses the juice bar, which serves organic, raw juice, various types of smoothies, and a Northwest Montana favorite: huckleberry milkshakes.

“I thought, ‘I’m here anyway, so why not try to diversify?’” Medlin said. “I have such a passion for food. I got into juicing about a year ago and it changed my life.”

The juices are chock full of fruits and vegetables, and have proven popular with regulars and walk-in clients alike. Medlin also delivers the juices to various yoga and pilates classes.

One of the creations, called Gogo Green, consists of apple, celery, cucumber, parsley, spinach, kale and lemon. Such combinations have attracted considerable attention from the community.

“There are just a lot of health-conscious people around here,” Medlin said.

The Greek food addition, which started up three weeks ago and is mobile in a food trailer called “The Greek Guy,” has also proven popular, he said. Even though the food is still pretty new, the food trailer has already been invited to the Gorge in Washington, and will be present for the Dave Matthews Band concert that takes place over Labor Day weekend.

It’s a lot to keep track of, but Medlin doesn’t mind.

“I just didn’t want to sit on my hands all day,” he said. “I’ve been so busy; it just happened that way.”

The hot weather has helped drive clients to the juice bar, which features outdoor seating at picnic tables, mellow music and a mister to help keep things cool. People filtered in and out of the small building at a constant rate, keeping Medlin and his staff busy.

But that’s the point, he said, and he’s happy with the variety of services the small location can offer tourists and locals alike.

“I thought, ‘Let’s just try and make it a fun stop,’” Medlin said. “Mopeds and milkshakes: what’s more fun than that?”
