Kalispell Man Charged After Brief Standoff

By Beacon Staff

A Kalispell man will face a felony charge after he allegedly walked out of his home with a high-powered rifle just as a sheriff’s deputy was pulling into the driveway.

Kevin McCulley, 48, was initially charged with felony assault on a peace officer after a brief run-in with the county SWAT team on July 21.

According to Sheriff Chuck Curry, a deputy went to the residence on Airport Road at about 7 p.m. on Sunday evening to interview McCulley as part of an investigation in a privacy in communication / harassment complaint.

When the deputy showed up at the house, McCulley allegedly walked outside with the weapon. The deputy was able to leave the area safely, Curry said, and no gunfire was exchanged. Law enforcement created a perimeter around the house, and the SWAT team responded.

After a brief negotiation period, McCulley exited the house unarmed and was taken into custody just before 11:30 p.m.
