The top tax rate in his proposal would be cut from 6.9 percent to 5.9 percent
HELENA — A Montana Senate committee is considering a plan to reduce the state's top tax rate while also getting rid of many credits and deductions.
State Sen. Bruce Tutvedt of Kalispell chairs the taxation committee. The Republican told the panel Thursday that his 81-page bill would dramatically simplify state tax filing.
The top tax rate in his proposal would be cut from 6.9 percent to 5.9 percent. The measure also cuts corporate license and contractor taxes.
Supporters included accountants who said the proposal would make Montana taxes much easier to file.
Opponents included supporters of some of the current deductions, such as those for energy efficiency improvements or for filming movies in the state.
