KRMC Expands Annual Heart Health Fair

By Beacon Staff

Kalispell Regional Healthcare is hosting the third annual Heart Health Fair on Saturday, Feb. 9.

The event will feature presentations on heart-healthy lifestyles, a cooking demo and a comprehensive interpretation of free health screening results.

Kalispell Regional Healthcare expanded this year’s event by extending the fair by two hours and moving the event to a Saturday morning this year. It runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Arts and Technology Building at Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell. Everything at the fair is offered at no cost, including health screenings, educational presentations and light refreshments.

Health screenings will be offered throughout the fair for blood pressure, cholesterol, lipids, glucose, body composition, sleep patterns, blood oxygen and depression. Adults with diabetes will have an opportunity to have their feet checked for potential circulation problems.

Fasting is optional for the screenings. Attendees should take their regular medications, drink plenty of water and wear loose, comfortable clothing. Shoes and socks will be removed for the body composition screening. A team of nurses will be on hand for immediate explanations of what the screening results mean to each participant. In-depth health discussions can be scheduled at a later date with your primary care physician.

Four 30-minute lifestyle presentations will be offered from 8-10 a.m. These will address weight loss, physical fitness, personal wellness and heart-healthy eating – including a talk by Registered Dietitian Holly Nickels and a cooking demo from Kalispell Regional’s Executive Chef Seth Bostick.

Educational sessions by cardiologists from Rocky Mountain Heart and Lung begin at 10 a.m. with Dr. Tom Amidon’s talk on Exercise and the Heart. At 11 a.m. Dr. Rob Mitchell will show how to Eat Your Way to a Healthy Heart, and then at 12 noon Dr. Eve Gillespie will give tips on Combating Congestive Heart Failure.

A wide variety of experts will be on hand through 1 p.m. to talk one-on-one about keeping your heart in good health.
