By Beacon Staff

HELENA — Democrat John Lewis’ campaign reports raising nearly $400,000 through the end of the year in his bid for Montana’s U.S. House seat.

Lee Newspapers of Montana reported Wednesday that Lewis is the first House candidate to release fundraising totals for the final three months of 2013.

The former aide to U.S. Sen. Max Baucus raised more than $200,000 in that period to bring his fundraising total to $396,000.

He has spent about $68,000 so far and has $328,000 cash in hand.

Lewis and Melinda Gopher are the Democratic candidates running for the open seat being vacated by Rep. Steve Daines, who is running for Senate.

At least five Republicans are running for the GOP nomination.
